an interlude: my dad the fan of all fans September 8, 2013

So, I’ve got a lot of catching up to do. I missed writing about our entire summer, and I will–I promise–catch up on that soon.

But first, a story that must be told.

I called my dad this morning to wish him good luck with the game today–you know, his beloved Green Bay Packers are playing in San Francisco against the 49ers. We had already, last weekend, discussed how weak the GB Packers were looking, and he forewarned me to not make any bets against the 49ers this year. He was sad, melancholy really, about his team this year.

But this morning when I called him, he sounded better. Then he told me the story.

Since he lives in the Bay area and GB is playing in SF, he left last night after work to search for the Green Bay Packers in all the hotels he thought they might be staying in. Ultimately, he came home without having seen them.

But then this morning, he set out again, and this time he realized he didn’t check the Westin. So he went that way. But by the time he got there, his beloved team (who was staying at the Westin) was already boarding the bus. He got out of his car and saw, sadly, that a kid had beat him to the bus and had already had his football signed by 5 at least 5 players.

He came home so depressed. I mean, it’s not like he makes it out to Green Bay to see them that often. My mom told me he lamented around the house murmuring, “I just don’t get how I didn’t think of the Westin last night. I used to be a detective.”

Oh, my dad. What can I say about him. That’s he’s a fanatic? Yes. That he’s quite possibly a stalker? Probably.

But most importantly, I respect him for his love and devotion of this football team. I can’t say I understand it, as I’ve never cared nor followed any sports’ teams (not even my kids’ teams over the years), but I love his love and excitement for something so completely intangible to me. But his love for GB is the same as his love for his family: devoted, willing to drive around stalking (Oh, I remember those teenage years!), and sad when we don’t perform at our best.

So, just as an interlude to the posts I should be writing about concerning summer, here’s one for my dad! The biggest Green Bay fan in California.
